Enugu

The plan by the Federal Government to reconstruct the dilapidated Enugu – Onitsha dual carriageway, a major gateway of the Eastern region of Nigeria has remained a failed promise by previous administrations

Though in 2015, the President Muhammed Buhari government commenced some work towards fixing the road, six years on, there is little to cheer.

President Buhari in 2019 promised that one lane of the Onitsha Awka axis of the Enugu Onitsha expressway will be completed and ready for use by June 2020.

Two years on, that promise is yet to be met as work is still ongoing on a section of the road.

While commending the government for the completion of the Umunya Axis and some other sections of the road, the people also want the contractors handling the road project to speed up and save the public from avoidable accidents and agonies as a result of bad road.

The people are asking the contractors to quickly give priority attention to the completely failed sections of the Ugwu Onyeama – Abakpa junction end of the road as well as the Oji River – Ugwuoba section, which have become death traps.

It is expected that the Federal Government will mobilize the contractors handling this strategic road network in the South East region of Nigeria to deploy more resources and equipment in order to complete the project and end the long-suffering of the people from this part of the country.
